An auto attack, sometimes called a basic or normal attack, is the default way a champion deals damage by right clicking an enemy or using the attack move command. When auto attack settings are enabled, a champion may also automatically strike nearby targets whenever they are idle and an opponent enters their attack range. Because auto attacks cost no resources, they serve as the foundation of early game trading and farming.
A basic attack deals physical damage based on a champion's AD (attack damage). This value does not change unless modified by crits, items, or abilities, which makes auto attacks one of the most reliable and consistent damage sources in the game. Turrets, minions, and jungle monsters also rely on auto attacks as their main form of damage, making them predictable threats during laning and objective fights.
Each champion has an attack timer that determines how long it takes to complete one attack and start the next. Increasing AS shortens this timer, allowing for more frequent attacks. Champions can also cancel the backswing of their attack animation to move sooner, which improves kiting and overall responsiveness. Because auto attacks scale with multiple offensive stats, they play a major role in sustained damage output and contribute directly to a champion's DPS during extended engagements.
