Attack Speed, or AS, is a stat that determines how quickly a champion can perform basic attacks, measured in attacks per second. Each champion starts the game with a unique base attack speed and gains additional attack speed naturally as they level. This built in scaling is considered bonus AS rather than an increase to base stats. Every champion also has an attack speed ratio that influences how effectively bonus AS converts into actual attacks, along with a windup percentage that controls how long the front portion of an attack animation lasts.
Bonus AS is gained from items, abilities, runes, or temporary buffs and stacks additively. Increasing AS shortens the time between attacks, which improves a champion's ability to deal sustained damage. Champions who rely on repeated Auto attack output, such as marksmen, benefit heavily from building AS because it enhances both their trading and overall DPS. AS also interacts closely with AD (attack damage), since higher attack speed means more opportunities to apply physical damage and on hit effects.
Because different champions have different ratios and windups, some gain more value from AS than others. Champions with fast animations or strong scaling can become significantly more threatening as they accumulate bonus attack speed throughout the game.
